Planting Malbec in an Argentine high-mountain desert was a bold decision. Italian-born Nicola Cantena did just that in 1902, and his family's wine dynasty lives on. Their vision is to make 'rich and unforgettable wines that are true to the special place they come from'. At an altitude of almost 5,000 feet, the family's vineyard is certainly special – the bold architecture of the winery is one of a kind and it has awe-inspiring views across the snow capped Andes.
Anne McHale, Master of Wine, says 'Catena Zapata is famous in the industry not only for the quality of its excellent wines, but also for its ground-breaking and innovative research which constantly pushes the boundaries of what Mendoza is capable of in terms of world-class wine production.'
The winery has played a pioneering role in resurrecting Malbec and has transformed the face of Argentine wine-making. Sample the wine in the dramatic location, by hiring a private jet to Mendoza.
If port is more to your taste, private jet your way to the Doura Valley in Portugal to savour the very finest. The stunning landscape is home to picturesque wineries including Quinta do Mourão, Quinta do Vesúvio (one of the last places where grapes are still trodden by foot) and Quinta do Bom Retiro.
After a day sampling exquisite ports, stay at Six Senses Douro Valley. The renovated 19th century manor house overlooks the rolling hills of the valley, and has its own wine library and organic garden.
