Unit Airfield Hazard Management Manager

Wildlife, particularly birds, pose a high risk to air safety, especially during critical points of flight, take-off and landing. The purpose of the Airfield Wildlife Control Operators (AWCO) is to eliminate the presence of birds and other wildlife on the airfield, reducing the risk to all aircraft. Wildlife is naturally attracted to the airfield due to several factors, the primary being the abundance of food.

We are looking for a Unit Airfield Hazard Management Manager to ensure the effective operation of all client service elements within the business.  As a technical specialist, you will undertakes the day-to-day management and efficient implementation of the Unit Airfield Wildlife Management Plan (AWMP). Your tasks will include: 

- Supervising and controlling Unit personnel, ensuring compliance with the contract, the SafeSkys Ltd Company Handbook and Health & Safety requirements.

- Liaising with SATCO/OC Airfield, on all matters relating with bird strike prevention and habitat management

- Supervising bird control records, logging bird counts, bird strike recording and reporting, bird dispersal, culling and habitat management

- Producing a monthly report which is to include information on bird control activity, habitat management, all bird strikes on and off the airfield, bird counts, input from SATCO.

- Ensuring local and Unit Orders are complied with 

- Ensuring equipment is serviceable and take action as required

- Ensuring compliance with all safety procedures for weapons and co-ordinate the supply, issue and accounting of all ammunition         

- Undertaking risk assessments on all tasks including periodic assessment and review of bird strike risks

- Acting as co-ordinator in the event of any bird strikes, liaising with the Station Flight Safety Officer (SFSO) and monitoring associated ASIMS reports as required

- Maintaining a good relationship with Defence Infrastructure Organisation Land Management Services (DIO LMS), local ornithological societies and establish a good rapport with local farmers and landowners

- Supervising and controlling the operation of the AHM vehicle

- Holding and updating the AHM articles in use as required

- Preparing and distributing Unit watch rosters to all Unit operatives, ensuring staff only work an average of 40 - 43 hours per week

- Ensuring that all necessary licenses, insurances, passes and permits are current and that insurance certificates are displayed appropriately

- Attending any site visits required by contractual agreement

- Be economical in the management of resources such as bird scaring equipment / cartridges, fuel etc.

What we are looking for:

In order to be considered for this role you must be colour perception safe, hold a full, valid UK driving licence and be able to apply for and maintain security clearance – this involves considerable financial and criminal record vetting. You will also ideally live within a maximum of a 45-minute drive from either Brize Norton, Northolt or Odiham Airfields.  You will also:

- Have an understanding and interest in wildlife and habitat matters related to airfields

- Have shooting experience 

- Have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

- Have an ability to work calmly and professionally under pressure

- Be proficient with IT including Microsoft Office productivity software 

- Have a full UK driving licence

- Be flexible 

Having previous experience of managing a unit/ team and arranging team rotas / rosters and producing reposts would also be a strong advantage.
